Waste disposal
According to the Waste Act, every operator, whether it is a resident or a company, must strive to produce as little material as possible that ends up as waste. In their operations, materials, products and services are processed in accordance with the order of priority, primarily favoring reuse, repair and recycling into recycled material. However, if waste is generated, the party producing it must take care of its waste appropriately by sorting its waste correctly and delivering it to designated collection points.
Municipalities are responsible for receiving and processing municipal waste and hazardous waste generated in residential areas. Companies are responsible for collecting and processing the waste they produce.
In the Kankaanpää area, the property owner arranges waste transport (contractual) for mixed waste, i.e. the property owner agrees to transport the waste with a waste transport company that is included in the waste management register of their choice. You can check whether a company is included in the waste management register www.jatehuoltokompassi.fi from the website.
Bio- and packaging waste and small metals from properties with at least five apartments located in urban areas were transferred to waste transport organized by the municipality in the first half of 2024.
The Kooninkeitaan sorting station receives waste for transfer and the waste management services at the sorting station are provided by Wattiway Oy from the beginning of 2026. As of January 12, 2026, card payments have been introduced at the sorting station, replacing the previously used paper waste payment tickets.
Only contaminated soil and asbestos have been received for final disposal at the Kooninkeitaan landfill since 2016. The landfill is being decommissioned and NG Nordic Finland Oy is responsible for its covering and waste to be utilized in structures.
The Kankaanpää waste management authority is a technical board, the supervisory authority is the Environmental and Health Board, and the regional supervisory authority is the Licensing and Supervision Agency (formerly the Southwest Finland ELY Centre) due to the agency reform from 1 January 2026.
Waste management services under the responsibility of the City of Kankaanpää are provided by Pohjois-Satakunnan Jätteidenkäsittely Oy, a waste management company owned by the city.
Every residential property must have at least one mixed waste container, either for private use or for shared use. Residents can also separately collect biowaste, either by composting it on the property or by joining the biowaste transport service by agreeing on emptying with the waste transport company of their choice. The amount of mixed waste can be reduced by separately sorting glass, metal, cardboard and plastic packaging as well as paper, disposable textiles, electrical and electronic waste, batteries and other separable waste. Regional collection or reception points have been arranged for separately sorted waste.
The regional reception of certain waste, such as electrical and electronic waste, batteries, packaging waste, paper waste and vehicle tires, is the responsibility of their producers, manufacturers and importers.
The collection points for all separately collected waste can be found on the common collection point map for the whole of Finland. on the recycling.info website (link).
