Mixed waste:

  • is non-recyclable and non-sortable waste generated in housing and living, i.e. waste that cannot be utilized as objects or materials and that does not belong to other waste fractions
  • does not go to landfill, but is burned in a municipal waste incineration plant to generate thermal energy
  • waste that does not contain hazardous substances or non-hazardous items, such as chemicals, mercury, pharmaceutical waste, batteries, metal or food.
  • for example, gum, rags, hygiene products, menstrual pads, cigarette butts, cat litter, tights, mirrors, porcelain, glassware, heat-resistant glassware and cosmetics.

 

Why is it worth sorting other waste separately? Why shouldn't everything be thrown into mixed waste?

  • When you sort other waste separately, you reduce the amount of mixed waste. This is especially evident in single-family homes, where you don't have to empty your bins as often.
  • Mixed waste is a waste fraction for which households are subject to a fee, while other waste that is sorted separately and taken to collection points is free of charge (glass packaging, paper, cardboard packaging, plastic packaging, metal, batteries and EEE, as well as hazardous waste).
  • Other waste can be reused as material in the manufacture of new products or treated to make it non-hazardous.
  • Other waste causes problems/challenges in the waste incineration process, for example, small metal yogurt jar lids are too light for metal separators and when mixed waste is incinerated, they melt and clump together.

 

Large and large quantities of mixed household waste are accepted:

Collection at the Kooninkeita waste station during opening hours in accordance with the Waste Tariff in force.
