Anyone who composts household food is required to register their composter in the official register starting January 1, 2023.

In Kankaanpää, the register is maintained by Pohjois-Satakunnan Waste Management Ltd and The obligation applies nationwide to all single-family homes and holiday homes, as well as housing companies that compost food waste. 

The notification is primarily made using an electronic notification form, and if necessary, the notification can also be made on paper.

 

The following information is required in the composting notification:

• address information of the owner, the person responsible for the composter and where the composter is used
• Does the compost contain food or toilet waste?
• composter model, volume, pest protection, thermal insulation
• usage (all year or part of the year)
• since use started (or if you are about to stop) month/year

 

Why is a composting register collected?

The aim is to obtain more accurate information on waste generation and sorting rates, as well as to monitor EU recycling targets. Finland aims to recycle 55% of its municipal waste by 2025 and 65% by 2035.

 

Why is composting or separate collection of biowaste worthwhile?

Composting is an alternative to separate collection of household bio-waste and is particularly useful for those who enjoy gardening. Most household municipal waste consists of plastic packaging and bio-waste, which, when sorted separately, do not need to be emptied nearly as often in the mixed waste bin.
