Streets and municipal engineering

The goal of the City of Kankaanpää is to create an urban environment that is safe, promotes well-being, and serves its residents well in terms of functionality.

This entity includes traffic routes, public areas and other municipal infrastructure. The aim is to build, maintain and develop these areas in the best possible way to meet the needs of both residents and businesses.

The city of Kankaanpää has a total street network of approximately 78 km, of which approximately 43 km are main and collector streets, 35 km are plot streets, and approximately 35 km are light traffic routes.

The public roads in the city area are managed by the Southwest Finland ELY Centre. In addition, there are private roads in the city area, which are maintained by private road management authorities.

The city maintains approximately 197 km of so-called old private roads that meet the requirements of state auxiliary roads, and some private roads are plowed based on a separate agreement.

Traffic safety is continuously improved by developing pedestrian routes and intersection areas. Main and collector streets are being renovated, and traffic and parking arrangements are being designed to be more functional.

The city's climate program and energy efficiency agreements guide operations, which is reflected, for example, in the renewal of street lighting in a more energy-friendly direction (LED lamps).

Accessibility of the urban environment is one of our key goals.

 

The pavements of the streets and traffic areas of the city of Kankaanpää form a significant part of the city's infrastructure assets. The condition of the pavements has a direct impact on traffic safety, traffic flow and maintenance costs. The planned implementation of pavement works and timely maintenance are key factors in managing the life cycle costs of the street network.

Technical services use asphalt paving work platform, which concern the paving of city streets and other public areas, and in particular the conditions and cost sharing for paving residential streets. The aim of the principles is to standardize operating methods, increase the transparency of decision-making, and improve the planning and predictability of paving work.

The principles define, among other things:

• street classification (residential streets, collector streets and main streets),
• prioritization criteria for paving sites,
• technical implementation principles of paving works,
• procedures and conditions for paving residential streets, and
• cost sharing between the city and street partners.

The programming of paving projects is based on the condition of the street network, traffic significance and traffic safety factors. The projects are prioritized annually within the budget and available appropriations.

The principles support the systematic management of the city's infrastructure assets and enable long-term programming of paving works.
