The minimum level of wastewater treatment is defined in the environmental permit for each treatment plant. The environmental permit gives the treatment plant the right to operate under certain conditions and restrictions with the aim of protecting the environment. The permit often contains detailed regulations on wastewater treatment, emissions to water bodies, air and land, and monitoring and reporting of operations.  

In Kankaanpää, wastewater treatment meets the conditions specified in environmental permits. 

Water hardness

The domestic water distributed by the Kankaanpää water company is soft. The average total hardness of the water is 0,49 mmol/l, or 2,74 °dH (so-called German hardness). When the water hardness is less than 1,4 mmol/l or less than 8 °dH, a water softener is not necessary.

The pH of the water

The acidity level, or pH value, of the domestic water distributed by the Kankaanpää waterworks is aimed at being kept at around 7,5, meaning it is slightly alkaline. A neutral pH value is 7.

Water fluoride content

Fluoride is considered an essential trace element for humans. Excessive intake of fluoride causes a disorder of tooth enamel formation, dental fluorosis. In areas where the fluoride content of water distributed by water utilities exceeds 1,5 mg/l, infant children and expectant mothers should obtain water in other ways. The health-based limit value for fluoride content in domestic water is 1,5 mg/l. The fluoride content of domestic water distributed by the Kankaanpää water utility is low, <0,2 mg/l, so there is no risk of excessive fluoride intake from domestic water.

Changes in water color

The color of water is not only an aesthetic problem, but also a technical disadvantage. The color of water has no direct connection with the health effects of domestic water. It is not recommended to use water with a color that deviates from the normal color. The color change of water is often caused by the release of sediment from the pipes inside the house, the plot water pipe or the main water pipe, for example, in connection with repairs.

Water turbidity

Turbidity in water is usually caused by air in the water and is most noticeable in hot water. The water will clear up within a few minutes, starting from the bottom.
