The size of your water and wastewater bill can sometimes surprise you. In such cases, you should first suspect the functionality of the property's own water equipment. One dripping tap can increase water consumption by up to 30 m³, or 30 liters per year, and cause the property to pay around 000 euros more in annual water bills. If there are several leaking taps, the additional costs can increase to hundreds of euros. Water leaks can often be repaired at low cost, for example by replacing the seals on the taps or the toilet cistern.

The figures below give an idea of ​​what different leaks cost per year. In the examples, the prices have been calculated according to the 2015 usage fees of the Kankaanpää City Water Supply and Sewage Authority. (water 1,23€/m³ and wastewater 2,37€/m³ = 3,60€/m³)

In addition to water and wastewater charges, water leaks result in costs for repairing damage to structures and possible mold damage. These costs can easily amount to thousands of euros. Leaking hot water can multiply the costs. Hot water costs twice as much as cold water due to the energy used for heating. Every property owner can monitor the property's water consumption themselves by periodically recording the water meter readings and calculating the long-term average of their property's normal daily consumption from these readings. The water meter should stop completely when water is not being used. If the meter does not stop or, for example, the monthly consumption deviates significantly from the average amount, there is reason to suspect a water main leak.
