Liisi Myllykangas's monotypes at Kankaanpää Gallery 2.-26.9.2026
Kankaanpää Gallery is exhibiting Liisi Myllykangas's monotypes, unique colorful and framed paintings created using the graphic method. The name of the exhibition, WITH ROOTS, refers to the Kankaanpää-born artist's roots in Kankaanpää.
The exhibition features new works by Liisi Myllykangas, but also works from previous years, including some from her watercolor period.
The artist has focused on making monotypes for the past ten years. Watercolors once inspired him to express himself in the 80s and 90s. His career was spent in management and expert positions, after which studying painterly graphics brought a new direction to his art, monotypes.
There is a certain similarity between monotypes and watercolors, as the work is created quite quickly, and does not allow for changes or additions afterwards. What is interesting about monotypes is the spontaneous creation of the works and each monotype is unique.
Often the inspiration for the works is colors or shapes, and nature in various forms is also visible in the works. Visuality, colors and harmony are important to the artist. He works on the works intuitively and most often without a precise plan.
The works are created with a palette knife and roller on a plate, which is then pressed onto paper. Monotype as a technique is fascinating and allows for a wide range of options and ways of expression that can be further developed. The monotype technique has attracted a lot of interest and the artist has also held work exhibitions and led monotype courses for small groups.
“In my works, I want to marvel at the brilliance of nature's colors and nuances, as well as the diversity and expressive beauty and harmony that the world around us is currently in great need of.”
In connection with the national Gallery Week #galleryweek, an artist meeting will be held on Saturday 26.9 September from 11 am to 14 pm, where Liisi Myllykangas will be present and talk about monotypes, demonstrate the monotype technique and answer questions. Coffee will be served by the Kankaanpää Art Association.
A survey will be held during the exhibition to find your favorite work. The prize for the survey will be a small monotype by Liisi Myllykangas drawn on Saturday, September 26th at 1:30 PM.
