LINE – planned, modern architecture Kankaanpää exhibition at the Kankaanpää City Museum 22.6.2020-25.4.2021
The functionality and aesthetic quality of the built environment create comfort for its users. They make residential and living environments desirable and contribute to well-being. A good environment creates affection for a place, a community and creates vitality. The exhibition “VIIVA – planned, modern architecture Kankaanpää” opening at the Kankaanpää City Museum presents the story of the city’s modern architecture from the 1930s to the present day for the first time on this scale.
Architecture and urban planning create built frames, boundaries and three-dimensional spaces for our environment and activities. Good planning is valued in Kankaanpää. Several notable architects have left their mark on the cityscape, starting with Kaija and Heikki Siren and Olli Kivinen. The LINE exhibition presents buildings, master plans, also unrealized visions and tells about designers. As the name suggests, the main part of the exhibition is the line and the shape formed from it, which is created through the collaboration of a trained designer and a wide range of professionals.
The city of Kankaanpää was awarded the SAFA award exactly 20 years ago for “long-term and exemplary action for an aesthetically high-quality and sustainable environment.” The VIIVA exhibition encourages observation of our living environment, seeing the features of different decades of modern architecture, and reflecting on the quality and future of our designed environment – the post-corona era.
The whole of the VIIVA exhibition was created through collaboration between the museum and experts. The strongest contribution to the whole; the in-depth exploration of the subject area and materials was made by Maija Anttila, a long-time city architect of the city of Kankaanpää, an influential figure who was awarded the Otto-Iivari Meurman Prize in 2018, and Doctor of Technology.
