The Kankaanpää City Museum's new exhibition "In the shops in Kankaanpää – Village shops & the city centre -85" highlights the history of Kankaanpää's shops from the villages and the 80s.

The exhibition is divided into three parts: one exhibition hall displays the shops in the center of Kankaanpää in 1985, and the other displays the shops in the villages of Kankaanpää throughout the 1900th century. The exhibition also includes other themes related to trade.

The exhibition opens on International Museum Day on May 18.5 and will be on display until April 26.4.2020, 12. – The exhibition offers nostalgia and a return of memories for those who remember Kankaanpää in 1985, and for others, a surprising abundance of services will be revealed, says the museum curator. Anu Forss.

The material from 1985 included newspaper photos and advertisements from Kankaanpää Regional Newspapers, Kankaanpää Regions, service directories and entrepreneur interviews.

The exhibition is also part of the Kortteeri project led by SAMK Kuvataide Kankaanpää, in which Kankaanpää City Museum is involved. The purpose of the project is to develop and revitalize the brick-and-mortar culture of shops, and this exhibition aims to strengthen this goal by drawing strength from history.

The village shops have been presented in the exhibition throughout the last century. There have been many village shops in the Kankaanpää area; every village has had at least a Cooperative, a Cooperative store and a private shop. The shops have decreased in the 1970s and 80s at the latest, leaving no trace in the museum's collections. From the buildings, if they remain, you may be able to see that there was a shop there too, but other information is difficult to find out.

Museum visitors have the opportunity to share their memories

The exhibition that is now opening is a nostalgic and, above all, communal journey into the history of brick-and-mortar commerce.

– The exhibition is of such a nature that many people have memories and information about the subject. The people of Kankaanpää have been really active during the preparation of the exhibition. We want to continue to supplement the museum's information during the exhibition, so that visitors to the exhibition have the opportunity to share their memories, says Forss.
