Kankaanpää is a regional town with approximately 12 500 inhabitants, which has grown into a naturally shaped residential and commercial area at the junction of Hämeen and Pohjankangas and is the center of business life in Northern Satakunta. Kankaanpää is located in the Satakunta region in the Northern Satakunta region at the intersection of highway 23 and main road 44. Kankaanpää's neighboring municipalities are Ikaalinen, Isojoki, Jämijärvi, Karvia, Kauhajoki, Parkano, Pomarkku, Pori, Sastamala and Siikainen.

There are traces of human activity in Kankaanpää since the Stone Age. In the 1500th century, permanent settlements began to emerge in the region. The oldest road in the province, the Kyrönkankaantie, ran along these Kankaanpää from Hämeenkyrö to Lake Nummijärvi in ​​Kauhajoki. The Kankaanpää parish was founded as a preaching parish in the Ikaalinen mother parish in 1756, as a chapel in 1759, and by imperial decree as its own parish in 1841. Kankaanpää Church was inaugurated in 1839. The church was designed by Johann Carl LudVig Engel.  

In the mid-1800th century, Kankaanpää had only 3 000 inhabitants. However, the population grew rapidly, largely due to the development of the road network. Until the 1840s, Kankaanpää belonged to the Turku trade area, until the road to Pori was built and the so-called plank era of Northern Satakunta began. Pori had Finland's largest merchant fleet, which transported plank goods to the world, and the forests here were abundant with wood. Kankaanpää was also an important transit point for timber transport from Hämeenkyrö, Ikaalinen and, after the road was completed, also from the direction of Parkano.

In the 1900th century, Kankaanpää grew into a significant center of trade and industry. The city is known for its shoe, clothing and meat processing companies, among others. The machinery, metal and construction product industries have also provided jobs for the entire region. Kankaanpää became a town in 1967 and a city in 1972.

Kankaanpää City Museum cherishes memories of the past and makes them accessible to everyone. The museum is located in Niinisalo, close to the garrison. It is worth trying the famous doughnut coffees from the Niinisalo military home during your visit to the museum.
