Go on an exploration trip to Sivupolu – a new art route as part of the cycling theme week in Kankaanpää

A map with destinations made for art orienteering

National Cycling Week is celebrated from 8 to 17 May. This year's theme is cycling and art. The Kankaanpää Art School of Satakunta University of Applied Sciences and the City of Kankaanpää collaborated to create an adventure called Sivupolku, which takes place in the city centre and allows visitors to see the city from a slightly different perspective.

– We participated in a voluntary collaborative project that we didn’t really know anything about beforehand. We were interested in the idea that we could explore the art, landscapes and various exciting places in the center of Kankaanpää and at the same time, of course, practice implementing a collaborative project, state the art students. Heidi Hallio, Rosa Sneck ja Amanda Essi.

The students created an art orienteering map with 27 checkpoints along the way. They offer surprising perspectives on the environment. Maps for the Side Path adventure are available at the SAMK Kankaanpää Art School gallery, the Kankaanpää Gallery, the city library and the sports centre.

The communication for the Sivupolku art map is carried out in collaboration with the City of Kankaanpää.

– We had already been thinking about how we could participate in the cycling week in the city, because this year's theme fits so well in Kankaanpää. When the students proposed collaboration on such a new kind of art route, we were happy to join in, says the marketing and communications manager. Leena Kuusimäki.

The map is also available on the city's website and the route can be explored throughout the summer. The Sidewalk project ends during Hörhiäisviiko in August. You can participate in the adventure by taking the map with you and finding the checkpoints. If you want to participate in the prize draw, you can react to the Sidewalk project announcement on the city's social media channels.

The Sidewalk project was created as part of SAMK Kankaanpää Art School's work-oriented teaching.

-It is important for us to be involved in developing the job description of a visual artist. We have also considered how we would introduce new, intangible and conceptual elements into the existing Art Circle. Through the side path, we can explore different ways of observing the local environment, concludes the lecturer from SAMK Thomas Regan.
