You can receive compensation for the following damages caused by large carnivores (wolverine, lynx, bear, wolf):

  • crop damage to fields, gardens, nursery crops and harvested crops
  • animal damage to dogs, domestic animals, farmed animals, honey crops, and fences, buildings and other similar structures used for animal husbandry
  • damage to movable property to inanimate movable property

The damage must be reported to the Rural Enterprise Authority immediately upon discovery. The authority will assess and assess the damage.

When reporting the damage by phone or email, you must also submit an application either in the Vipu service or using form 131 within one month of the completion of the assessment report prepared by the rural business authority.

The municipal rural business authority determines and assesses the damage.

Upon receipt of the notification, the municipal rural industry authority shall immediately arrange a field inspection, in which it shall determine and assess the damage and draw up an assessment report on the damage. In addition to the claimant, a representative of the game management association shall be invited to the field inspection.

A prerequisite for receiving compensation is that the injured party has used reasonable means at their disposal to prevent the damage from occurring or from expanding.

Amount of compensation

The maximum compensation for crop damage is the value of the lost crop and the fair value of damaged horticultural and nursery plants. The Finnish Food Authority issues an annual order unit prices and standard yields of damaged agricultural, horticultural and nursery crops.

The maximum compensation for animal damage is

  • the fair value of an animal killed or euthanized due to an accident, or
  • An amount equivalent to the veterinary costs of the injured animal up to the fair value of the animal.

The fair values ​​of animals are based on the decree of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. 834/2018.
