Morning and afternoon activities for schoolchildren 2026–2027

Operational objectives

The National Board of Education has decided on the basis of morning and afternoon activities in Basic Education in accordance with Chapter 8a of the Basic Education Act.

The social basis for organizing morning and afternoon activities is to provide a safe environment for children to grow up. The activities support parenting by providing practical help in coordinating family, school and working life. In the activities, the child does not play the role of a student, but is referred to as a child. The purpose of the activities is not to extend the school day, but rather to provide the child with supervised/supervised free time. The instructors of the morning and afternoon activities plan the actual content of the activities and are responsible for their implementation.

The activity is composed of the following content entities:

  • ethical growth and equality
  • play and interaction
  • exercise and outdoor activities
  • eating and resting
  • culture and traditions
  • manual skills and crafts
  • visual, physical, musical and linguistic expression
  • media skills
  • everyday chores, living environment and sustainable lifestyle
  • various knowledge and skill-based topics

Applying for the activity and selection criteria

  • The application period for the new term begins with the application to the school and ends March 31, 2026.
  • A child has the opportunity to receive a place in the morning and/or afternoon activities for schoolchildren if both guardians are working or studying. A place can also be granted for a reason based on an expert opinion.
  • All preschool-age children can get a place in the club activities that supplement preschool education at the Honkajoki unit.
  • Applying for activities takes place electronically, primarily through the Wilma system.
    • https://kankaanpaa.inschool.fi/ via the following path: Applications and decisions -> Make a new application -> Application for morning and afternoon activities. You cannot apply using the phone app, but must do so using a browser (a mobile browser will also work).
  • If using Wilma is not possible, you can also apply using a paper form. You can print the application form here. or it can be picked up at the office. The completed paper form can be returned either as a scanned email attachment or directly to the Kukonlaulu, Tähtitorni or Puukoulu office.
  • The activity will involve as many students in grades 1–2 and those under 11 who receive individual support as possible.
  • If there are more people registered than can be accommodated, priority will be given to:
    • those who applied during the application period, 1st grade students, students receiving individual student support, those with a social services or medical certificate.
  • For students who are 11 years old and need individual support, an application is submitted to the Satakunta Welfare Area Disability Services.
  • Children who do not get a place will be placed on a waiting list. A place can be taken from the waiting list when places become available.
