Hobbies at Kankaanpää schools

Home » Education » Basic education » Hobbies at Kankaanpää schools

The “Harrasta Kankaanpää” project is part of the nationwide “Harrastamise Finland” model funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. In Kankaanpää, school club activities are implemented and financed through the “Harrasta Kankaanpää” project. The club activities have a part-time coordinator.

The main goal of the Finnish model of hobbies is to increase the well-being of children and young people. The goal is to enable every child and young person in grades 1–9 of basic education to have an enjoyable and free hobby during the school day. School-specific hobby activities are selected based on the wishes of children and young people, which have been mapped both through national and, if necessary, school-specific surveys. The Finnish model of hobbies is enshrined in the Youth Act. The project already covers almost 400,000 children or young people in Finland.

Club activities are not part of school hours and are therefore not covered by school transportation. Activities are tied to school days.

In the 2025–2026 school year, club activities will consist of the Kipinäkerho club, school-specific hobbies, and remote clubs.

Kipinä is a form of hobby and leisure activity for 4th–9th graders. The club meets at the sports center on Wednesdays from 15 p.m. to 17 p.m., when you can participate in your chosen hobbies. A small snack is also available. If necessary, transportation is available from Honkajoki and all branch schools, please call 040 3580803. Kipinä offers a variety of hobbies, which can be varied in terms of participation, and the range of hobbies also varies, and clubs can come and present their offerings.

Currently, Kipinä's hobby tray includes swimming, scootering/skating (weather permitting, bring your own helmet!), ball games, climbing and robotics. Registration is open Monday-Tuesday through the HOP IN registration system.

Desired hobbies

The hobbies desired by Kankaanpää for the 2025–2026 school year are parkour, climbing, film, bowling, visual arts/animation, computer gaming and game design, football, basketball, photography and videography, gym, cooking, hunting and fishing, billiards and snooker. You can see the school-specific wishes and the survey at the link. The hobbies for primary schools last the entire school year, and there are different options for secondary schools, depending on the interests of the young people. The activities can be guided or allow for independent work.

Wednesday Kipinä is a new concept for meeting the hobby wishes of 4th–9th graders. On Wednesdays, the sports center offers the opportunity to spend time with friends, do homework, and try out hobbies on your wish list, including parkour, climbing, ball games, martial arts, cooking, photography, shooting, bowling, horseback riding, scootering/skating, robotics and programming, and swimming.

The list of hobbies is supplemented according to wishes and possibilities. The instructors are alternately experts in different sports, associations, city sports instructors and various educational experts. By focusing, we are able to offer more people a hobby of their choice, and offer three age groups a common place to spend time after school.

The coordinator of the Hobbies at Kankaanpää schools project, Katri Anttinen, is responsible for the whole project, and the project is funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Katri can be contacted via WhatsApp, phone, text message, Wilma and email.

Would you like to be a club instructor or hobby facilitator?

The quality of the club activities is guaranteed by the instructor's expertise in their own field, in pedagogy, group guidance and in meeting special needs children. The organizers of the activities are representatives of the private or third sector, including sports clubs, cultural operators, youth organizations and other communities organizing recreational activities that have expertise in working with children and young people. You do not have to be a professional, entrepreneur or association official, you can also be an amateur interested in guidance.

Ask more!

In Kankaanpää, the coordinator of school children's hobbies is part-time project coordinator Katri Anttinen. She can be reached by phone at 040 358 0803 and by email [email protected]. You can contact Katri in all matters related to school children's hobby activities.
