Student care

Student care refers to the promotion and maintenance of good learning, good mental and physical health, and social well-being of students, and activities that increase the conditions for these within the educational institution community. Student care is implemented primarily as preventive community-based student care that supports the entire educational institution community, and in addition, as individual student care.

All authorities and employees working with students in an educational institution and responsible for student support services must promote the well-being of students and the educational institution community, as well as cooperation between homes and the educational institution. The educational institution's staff has primary responsibility for the well-being of the educational institution community.

The education provider is responsible for ensuring that an institution-specific student care plan is drawn up for the implementation, evaluation and development of student care. It is drawn up in cooperation with student care providers, students and guardians. The education provider is also responsible for the implementation of the matters described in the student care plan.

The Satakunta Welfare Area is responsible for organizing individual student care services in the schools of the city of Kankaanpää. Individual student care refers to school and student health care services, student care psychologist and curator services, and multidisciplinary individual student care provided to individual students. Individual student care will continue to be organized in schools as usual.

Together, a safer North Satakunta

The Finnish National Board of Education has granted the city of Kankaanpää a special state grant to prevent and intervene in bullying and violence in basic education. The project also involves other education organizers in the Pohjatuuli Family Center area, namely Karvia, Jämijärvi, Siikainen and Pomarkku. The project strengthens student participation and the community spirit of schools to ensure a safer learning environment. A full-time project coordinator is working on the project. The project ends on 31.07.2027.

You can find more information about the project here. from the project website or from project coordinator Tiia Rosnell, tel. 044 5772 453

School curators

School curator work is based on the Act on Pupil and Student Welfare (1287/2013) and the Social Welfare Act 1301/2014, which affects it, including sections 3, 5, 6, 10, 13, and 32, and the Child Welfare Act 1302/2014, section 3 a (preventive child welfare).

The school counselor supports students in life's difficult situations related to school, home, friendships or free time. He/she works together with the student, student groups, teachers and guardians. If necessary, the school counselor is involved in planning, discussing and deciding on the forms of general, enhanced and special support to be offered to the student. The school counselor's task is to ensure that the child is heard and is genuinely involved in managing his/her own affairs.

The curator can be contacted by guardians, the student themselves, the teacher, or another person working with the student or a loved one.

School psychologists

A school psychologist is legally required to work in schools as part of the school's student welfare. The aim of their work is to promote the learning and psychological well-being of schoolchildren in collaboration with students, guardians and school staff.

Parents or the student themselves can contact the school psychologist directly. A student can also become a client of a school psychologist at the initiative of a teacher or other school and student welfare employees.

In addition to community work, the job description of a school psychologist includes, among other things:

  • Assessment of learning and school difficulties. Before conducting an extensive learning study, an assessment of the need for learning research is made. Based on the studies conducted and any learning research, further plans are made in cooperation with the student, parents and school.
  • Advice and guidance on matters related to a child's or young person's learning and development, for example when they are concerned about issues related to mood, fears or anxiety. A school psychologist does not provide actual therapy or other long-term treatment.

School and student healthcare

School health care bulletin for guardians and students SataHA 1.8.2025 (PDF)

School health care continues the work of the clinic by monitoring and assessing the health of children and young people. The goal is to ensure that students grow and develop as healthily as possible and to encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyles. School health care is part of the school's student care.

Health checks

The main focus of health check-ups is on the 1st, 5th and 8th grade check-ups, where in addition to the check-up by the public health nurse, there is also a medical check-up. In other grades, a lighter check-up is carried out by the public health nurse. The check-ups include traditional measurements (height, weight, vision, hearing, posture, blood pressure), and all meetings include a discussion of health behavior (outdoor activities, nutrition, sleep, exercise) and health advice on these issues as well as on intoxicants, changes during puberty, school attendance, risk factors related to career choice, etc. Guardians are welcome to attend the check-ups!

Treatment of diseases

A student should not be sent to school when sick. If a student suddenly falls ill at school, the guardian will be notified. The guardian of a child under the age of 10 has the opportunity to obtain a certificate from the school nurse about the child's illness. Any minor medical procedures the student may need are carried out at the school nurse's office (stitch removal, ear irrigation, minor wound care, etc.). The school doctor's office is the basic service center for all schools in Tapala. Appointments can be made with the school nurse. Visits are free of charge for those under the age of 18.
